Flashback: Come Back To Me

Still from Janet Jackson's "Come Back to Me" music video.

Janet Jackson has been an icon in music and fashion since I was a little girl.  She began her singing career just as I was starting elementary school so I literally grew up to her to music.

When I was young, one of my favorite songs was “Come Back To Me.” The tone is melancholy, the music is soft and melodic and the lyrics are easy to remember.  Of all the scenes in the video, one of the images that has always stuck with me is the one of her snuggling with her ex-husband Rene Elizondo inside of his wool coat.  (I always thought that that scene was so sexy and romantic.)

I happened to watch the music video on television on one of those flashback video shows.  The clip brought back so many good memories of my childhood, the fun we had dancing to her songs and of course my passion for Paris.

I had forgotten that the video was filmed in Paris, one of my favorite cities in the world.  It features all of the iconic images of Paris that we love, giving us sweeping views of the Eiffel Tower, the Seine River, the famous statues and buildings, trains passing and a glimpse into an Old World Parisian flat complete with grand staircases and picture windows.

The video tells a story of Janet longing for her lover who has left on a train, she thinks about him in the flat and while on a walk through Paris.  Images of them cuddling and canoodling over dinner flash by while they are juxtaposed with a couple fighting in her building.  Janet had the long jet black hair layered in that late 1980s fashion with her famous key ring earrings.  The video reminds me of the days when videos told stories like short films and featured real models and dancers.  (Not that I’m complaining too much about the videos of now, just saying.)

Watching it again made me wonder if my love for Paris began when I first saw it.  I’m not sure, but it could have definitely played a role in my passion for Paris.  Either way, it’s one of my favorite videos and definitely in my top 10 for my favorites by Janet.  It has the trifecta for me: one of my favorite icons + favorite songs + favorite city.

Watch Come Back To Me here and reminisce with me.
