Musical Playlist #15: John Coltrane

John-Coltrane-PC-Chuck-Stewart.jpg

John Coltrane was born on September 13, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina.  In honor of his birthday and because he is my favorite jazz musician, I am dedicating this entire Musical Playlist to him. Of all the jazz musicians I admire (Davis, Ellington, Monk, Garland and many others), I feel most moved by Coltrane.  I am not sure if it is his avant-garde approach to music, those 'complex chord progression cycles and masterful improvisations' or the sheer emotion I feel in his music but Coltrane has that extra something that makes his music so powerful and moving to me.

Clearly, I am not alone in my respect and admiration of him.  Coltrane continues to win awards many years after his death, including a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation awarded to him in 2007.  Not bad for a man who left us back in 1967.

Featured are clips of Coltrane playing some of his biggest hits.  I tried to include as many performance clips as possible.

  1. My Favorite Things

  2. Naima

  3. On Green Dolphin Street

  5. Angelica (with Duke Ellington)

  6. In A Sentimental Mood (with Duke Ellington)

If you are not a fan of Coltrane, I hope you are now.  For all of the Coltrane lovers, Enjoy!
