Blazing Words: We Carried It With Us

It's amazing to me

What we brought with us

When we didn't take much

On those ships

As we crossed the Atlantic Ocean

Charmed and shackled

And packed like sardines

We survived that journey

With an unbroken spirit

A beating in our heart

And a song in our soul

We lost our language

Culture and traditions

They sold our bodies

But not our souls

We did not all come from the same place

Nor speak the same language

But we showed a pain

A hurt and anguish

And though they took away our drum

We sang and danced anyway

We called it the Blues

And though we sang it in English

Heavy traces of the Continent

Could be heard when we sang

Almost like taking a bridge

Leading us back across the Atlantic

To the Mother Land
