Musical Playlist 27: Coltrane & Company

Coltrane-Co.jpg

After watching Chasing Trane, I decided to revisit the works of John Coltrane but with an emphasis on his collaborations. (You can read my review of the film, here.)

Coltrane is one of my favorite jazz men and musical artists of all time. Over the years I have studied and written about him and the documentary gave me another viewpoint on the man and his works. It also allowed me to delve further into his catalog and discover musical gems from his collaborations. Whether Coltrane was the sideman, band member, musical partner or band leader, his sound always resonates with me.

Over his lifetime, Coltrane collaborated with many artists, some of whom are featured on this musical playlist: Milt “Bags” Jackson, Miles Davis, Johnny Hartman, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Lee Morgan and many many more.

This list is, by no means, exhaustive. In fact, this musical playlist is just a taste of the great music featured in Coltrane’s catalog. I urge newcomers and fans alike to look deeper and learn more. Especially as more music is being released from his archives.
